A Popular Smorgasburg Fried Chicken Vendor Gains Brick & Mortar in Pasadena
Daddy’s Chicken Shack unveils a small new space this week
Daytime office workers have a new option for lunch near Old Pasadena this week, as Daddy’s Chicken Shack comes to a small takeaway space right off Dayton Street near the park. The small space doubles as a commissary and catering kitchen, but now offers a limited menu of fried chicken sandwiches, popcorn chicken, fries, and more.
Daddy’s Chicken Shack got its start at Smorgasburg, the bustling Sunday food market and bazaar at the Row in Downtown Los Angeles. The Southern-style chicken sandwiches and other mains are the work of Pace Webb, a well-known catering chef behind the company Taste of Pace. The catering kitchen was already in use at the space on Dayton, so it was no big struggle to throw up a couple of walls, add a point of sale system, and start selling sandwiches. Perhaps most interesting is the restaurant’s vegan offerings, including a coconut curry-brined cauliflower sandwich option, and all-vegan faux-chicken nuggets.
As for seating, expect some shaded sidewalk tables and a small cluster of other seats in a parking lot next door (and more on the way), but that’s about it. The hours also reflect the lunchtime takeaway ethos to the place, running from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, while still keeping their Sunday Smorgasburg booth. Look for an official unveiling party tomorrow, complete with giveaways on social media.
Meanwhile, Pasadena continues to grow with a slew of new restaurants across the city. There’s Entre Nous doing casual French, the recently-opened Superba Snacks + Coffee, and a tiny space doing what may be China’s most popular breakfast street food, the jianbing.
